Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that New Zealand will only get one model of the updated CLS-Class here, the top-end AMG CLS 53 model.
The CLS is essentially a four-door coupe version of the E and S Classes, combining luxury and sportiness. The AMG 53 version receives a new front apron with “striking” air intakes, two louvers on the sides, angry LED headlights and a glossy black front splitter under the AMG Pan-American grille.
Kiwis receive the Night package as standard, which adds brighter black accents to mirror housings and side window surrounds. 20-inch AMG alloys are also standard.
At the rear is a black “diffuser look insert” with a chrome trim strip and a small spoiler adorning the trunk. The slender LED taillights sit above a quartet of tailpipes, which give a signal to what’s under the hood.

Being a “53” car, the AMG CLS 53 features a turbocharged inline six cylinder producing 320 kW and 520 Nm. Not as much as something like the smaller BMW M3, but the additional electrical support of the starter-generator. 48 volts adds an additional 16 kW / 250 Nm to help catch up with ground.
Mercedes says it can hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds thanks to the grip of all-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic.
Naturally, a handful of drive modes can be selected to change the exhaust note if you’ve specified the AMG performance exhaust, as well as to adjust the air suspension to suit the mode; harder and lower for Sport and Sport Plus, softer for Comfort.
As standard, the CLS 53 receives a 13-speaker Burmeister surround sound system, black Nappa leather AMG seats, black ash wood trim, 64-color ambient interior lighting, wireless charging for smartphones and an AMG steering wheel.
It also benefits from a number of active safety aids, such as a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, active lane change assistance, active parking assistance and the new âPre-Safeâ lateral accident preparation system. Impulse âwhich pulls the front passenger away from the door in case the side radars detect an impending collision, reducing injuries.
Pricing for the AMG CLS 53 starts at $ 179,990, while a special limited-edition model adds $ 14,000 to the price. Both are available to order now.
The Limited Edition is a series of 299 special cars featuring a different AMG steering wheel and the Dynamic Plus pack that adds the Race driving program, as well as a drift mode.
It also features power-closing doors, pearl silver gray / black two-tone AMG Nappa leather upholstery, peripheral lighting with AMG puddle lights and an AMG car cover.
Additional details include carbon fiber interior trim, red seat belts, red brake calipers, more black accents on the exterior, 20 inch matte black wheels and Selenite Gray Magno paint with decals special red / black on the sides.
And it is also a true “limited edition”, with only two of the 299 units built to make it to New Zealand.
