Live from New York: 8 fall accessory trends that are dominating the street style scene

We’ve been doing a lot of reporting on fall 2021 trends, but now it’s time to see what passed the test and made its way into all of fashion. What better look than New York Fashion Week? While the weather might not have been the cool, autumnal weather of our dreams, fashion people didn’t miss the opportunity to get out their leather, fluffy accessories, and thigh-high boots. I took notes of onlookers walking past and dived again into street style photography to confirm common themes surrounding everyone’s favorite props.

In a few weeks, you’ll see the accessories below on more than just those attending the fashion shows. Keep scrolling to get your fall fashion fix.

Statement belts

I was never a big fan of belts, but the remarkable belts I saw on the street convinced me. They are an easy addition to a simple dress or a fitted blazer.

Black brown Lina Leather Belt ($ 155)

Zara Leather belt with buckle ($ 40)

Mango Tie closure belt ($ 30)

“Fits Any” Bags

Small bags have their special place, but it’s all about “bigger is better” for 2021 fashion. I’m so used to seeing a plethora of less functional small bags during the week of fashion, so it was a pleasant surprise to see so many schleppers colleagues.

Zara Quilted Shopper with Chain ($ 70)

Coach Ergo Leather Crossbody Bag ($ 395)

Demellier Los Angeles Tote Bag ($ 535)

Large sunglasses

Retro sunglasses aren’t new to the fashion world, but wider styles are starting to appear. Whether it’s a tinted lens or something more square and outdoor, you’re good to go.

Freckle mark Vintage Retro 70s Sunglasses ($ 13)

Gucci Horsebit Oversized Square Sunglasses ($ 420)

Urban outfitters Oversized Square Mel Sunglasses ($ 18)

Thigh high boots

Boots, who? I’m just kidding. I’ll always love my ankle boots, but tall boots are a fan favorite this season, and not just the knee-high boots. We’ve seen mid-thigh silhouettes on the runway and we doubt they will resonate with customers, but it is clear that they are.

Zara High heel boots ($ 119)

Jeffrey campbell Dauphin Above Knee Boot ($ 215)

Who what to wear Cate Knee High Boot ($ 159)

Silk scarves

I wear a hijab, so even though the “scarf” isn’t quite a trend for me, I still notice the silk scarves that have fallen in the spotlight. Most of them are available in fun colourways so I think they add a great touch of fun to any look. I replaced my usual scarves with silk scarves when I want to add “jazz” to an outfit.

Vela scarves Silk Crocodile Square ($ 45)

Zara Satin-effect printed handkerchief ($ 18)

& other stories Mulberry Silk Blend Striped Scarf ($ 39)

Sheepskin bags

When the cold hits, it’s hard to resist a furry accessory. You probably already have a cozy coat on deck, so why not take it up a notch with your bag of choice?

Jacquemus Le Chiquito Medium Bag ($ 950)

Simon miller Mini puffin bag ($ 220)

Marc Jacobs Small Faux Sheepskin Tote Bag ($ 250)

No it is not Emilie in Paris, but with the right style, I promise you a beret isn’t the staple accessory everyone claims to be for Lily Collins’ character. It’s a chic addition that polishes up a look, while other hats can tone things down.

Opened it Faux Leather Beret ($ 25)

& other stories Wool beret ($ 29)

Hat Tribe Classic French Beret in Stretch Wool ($ 7)

Large Beads

Pearls are another accessory that has been around for a while but has been reinvented in many ways. While beads mixed with fun beads were popular for summer, I saw larger, heavier beads as the preferred choice for fall.

Misho The charm of the nymph ($ 115)

& other stories Organic Pearl Pearl Necklace ($ 39)

Brinker & Eliza Khai earrings ($ 148)
