The company Central Pa. Develops a leather recycling process

A company in Pennsylvania has developed a process for recycling leather, and the founders say it’s a way to protect the environment. Every year, tons of leather scraps are thrown away by all manufacturers, from boots to bags. This waste often ends up in landfills. Sustainable Composites now recycles much of its leather into products called inspirational leather. “Currently, several different companies are working together to take and recycle them,” said Franklin Fox. Much of the scrap used by the company comes from Wilson, like Wilson Soccer. “We can really rebuild another discarded material and restore it to its original state,” Fox said. Tommy Tyman, whose father helped develop the process, is the company’s test lab. The leather scraps are crushed into a kind of fibrous down. It is mixed with chemicals to form a slurry, which is then dried and pressed into a sheet of recycled leather. “I think it’s really interesting. There are many possibilities to reduce waste, ”explains Tyman. Made in New York. We make 4 × 8 sheets with different colors and textures. The company manufactures many prototypes of products from this material. Leather can look, feel and smell, but it is not leather. Call it leather, legally it has to be out of the cow, ”Fox said.
