Finally, a fashion trend for literary nerds

Now is the time to embrace the Dark Academia trend

As a holder of a bachelor’s degree in literature and whose favorite literary genre is Dark Academia, I cannot describe in words the immense joy I felt when the literary phenomenon jumped off the page and landed in our closets. .

I guess I have Tiktok to thank for the now established fashion trend. Riding the tails of another aesthetic style invented and made popular by Gen-Z as chalet core and fairy core, Refinery29 first drew our attention to the rise of Dark Academia in 2020, denouncing the generation’s obsession with romanticizing all things intellectual. Soon social platforms were riddled with stacks of photogenic books, broken newspapers lined with scripts, atmospheric reels of steaming cups of coffee against a rain-splashed window backdrop and a striking sense of fall fashion that could be described as sacred, yet idyllic.

In many ways, Dark Academia parallels Gothcore; they’re similar in that they’re both centered on a moody aesthetic, for lack of a better term, dark elements. But while gothcore takes inspiration from metal and rock music culture and involves sultry cutouts, a lot of PVC material, and punk accessories (like necklaces, chains, crosses, etc.), Dark Academia fashion is rooted in art. It’s less of a vampy, nightmarish fantasy (see Kourtney kardashian and Megan Fox for reference) and more from Vintage Ivy League.

In simpler terms, you could think of Dark Academia as prep school fashion with a Gothic twist. It’s classic and European, romantic and tragic, influenced by things like Greek mythology and poetry with existential themes, from writers like Shakespeare, the Bronte sisters and Jane Austen. Modern sources of inspiration include films like Circle of Missing Poets and Sherlock holmes, as well as contemporary works of dark academic fiction, such as Donna Tartt The secret story and ML Rio’s If we were bad guys.

Unlike gothcore, Dark Academia’s wardrobe consists of pieces that would meet private school dress code standards. To dress up the room, create a capsule collection of tailored pants and pleated skirts, collared shirts, comfy cardigans and pairs of chunky moccasins. Layering is also key to the Dark Academia style. Incorporate different textures with knit sweaters or cardigans layered over buttons, skirts worn with tights and fancy outerwear like a trench coat or blazer being closet staples.

Popular accessories in the category include leather messenger bags and briefcases, berets, ties and bows for the hair, and a book under the arm. You’ll want to add a cup of coffee or tea to really refine the aesthetic.
