The direct-to-consumer brand uses wood from Quebec, as well as premium leathers from France, to create its elegant “off-season” accessories that are handcrafted by artisans in Italy.

We caught up with founder / designer Marie-Philippe Thibault to find out more.

Q. For those who don’t know, what is Mas?

A. Mas offers handcrafted leather bags in limited quantities, designed to be carried home wherever you go. Mas is all about the people who revolve around bags, from the artisans who make them in Italy to the person who wears them all over the world.

Since everything goes so fast, I wanted to create a collection without season, which has longevity and reality embodied through all its high quality details. We don’t follow trends either. We want a bag to exist for a specific function. A bag for going to work, a bag for going out, a bag for shopping, a bag for traveling, etc.

Q. Is there a story behind the name?

A. Mas refers to a traditional country house in the south of France. It evokes the family spirit, a safe paradise and a secret place of hidden moments.

Q. What makes the brand unique?

A. I believe that the Mas philosophy, where we place the greatest value on our employees, makes us unique. We value humanity and we value creativity. To create a bag that will be eternal, it takes time. Time to think, to discover and this is how the beauty of a design becomes a reality.

Q. Who is the target customer?

A. Mas is for a person who wants to shine while being discreet, that is to say moving, passionate and ambitious.

Q. What more can you say about where the handbags are designed / made?

A. I grew up in a small town called Esterel in Quebec. My first memory is colored by my family estate between the lake and the wild beauty of nature and the mountains of Canada. This is why Mas is designed in Canada and also why we have wooden details on the bags.

It took me three years to build Mas. One of the reasons is that I wanted the bags to be made with the best materials and by the best people. That is why the bags are made in Italy. It is the source of craftsmanship, creativity and innovation. Our leather comes from a family tannery in France. All of their work is hand finished and they have a Leather Work Group certification. The wood is made in Quebec and comes from Canada. We are obviously the source of the wood and wanted to enhance the bags with these unique details.

Q. What is the price range for Mas handbags?

A. It starts at $ 840 for the smaller bag and $ 1,960 for the larger one.

Q. And finally, where can we consult them?

A. Now we sell online at Themasfamily.com .
