His first collection for Montblanc as artistic director is called Meisterstück, named after one of the company’s famous writing instruments. Many of the collection’s details, such as zipper pulls and other hardware, recall the tradition of fine writing instruments, and each bag is, of course, equipped with special slots for storing a pen.
Each new design is discreetly branded with Montblanc’s curved star emblem, which Tomasetta said was key to reinforcing the brand’s presence. “I hope you can see that there is a larger emblem and the details have the shape of the Meisterstück. All shapes and lines are reminiscent of elements of the Meisterstück. The writing is the common thread of all products” , he told WWD through a translator.
Functionality and versatility were among Tomasetta’s main goals. “The first thing I wanted to do with Montblanc was to work with more flexible or avant-garde materials in order to design new products to protect everyday technology and, of course, pens,” said the designer.
Leather briefcases, laptop cases, tote bags, cross-body styles and wallets in soft matte leather all have sleek silhouettes and proportions, offering a timely sense of minimalism that is also found in more conservative work environments.
While Montblanc is better known for its pens than its leather bags, Tomasetta replied that “Givenchy [where I most recently worked] has no tradition in leather and accessories, whereas Montblanc is more credible in this market. I wanted to join Montblanc because it has leather in its DNA and looking in the archives, they first had a pen and then came a selection of small leather goods to protect writing instruments. It’s a tradition.”
Prices start at $290 for a card holder to over $2,000 for a duffel bag, which the brand considers its flagship item. The collection will be available on Montblanc’s website as well as in its global boutiques from Thursday.
