‘Dirty Dancing’ star Jennifer Gray called her past relationship with Johnny Depp a ‘fucking bonfire’ in an interview with People, promoting her upcoming memoir ‘Out of the Corner’.
“It was hot. It was a fucking bonfire,” she told the magazine. “It was literally like, ‘Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me? I’ve never seen a guy like that.'”
Gray and Depp were together for about a year after her engagement to “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” co-star Matthew Broderick.
In 1987, the year “Dirty Dancing” premiered, Broderick and Gray were in a car accident in Ireland that killed two people, according to The New York Times.
“We were so young. And not a week goes by that I don’t think about it. That I don’t think of families. That I don’t think of Matthew,” she told The Times. “It’s just inside me. It’s part of my topographical map, the landscape of my life.”
Their relationship could not survive the tragedy and Gray moved on to Depp, who was introduced to him by his agent.
“If a mirage could have been a person in the summer of 1988, that mirage would have been Johnny Depp,” she wrote in her memoir, released May 3.
“And energetically, what it was like to be with him was like, ‘Oh, I’m totally, totally compensated for the shit I just went through,'” she told People, making apparently referring to the car accident with Broderick.
In her book, Gray wrote that they had been in their relationship for two weeks when Depp asked her to marry him and she accepted. She told People they were often “paired up” and wore “matching leather jackets.”
“On August 12, I wrote in my diary: ‘I’m in love, I’m pretty sure this is the first time in my life…He’s kind, funny, smart, moral, caring, respectful'” , Gray shared in “Out Du Coin.”
Their relationship didn’t last as Depp’s career grew. Gray said he grew more frustrated as he became more established as a Hollywood heartthrob, which didn’t bode well for their relationship.
People reported that Gray broke up with Depp via a note she left in her hotel room after saying he left for a meeting one day and didn’t return. Their engagement lasted nine months.
Representatives for Depp did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
Gray then married actor Clark Gregg. The two divorced in 2021 after 19 years.
Depp would go on to have many high profile relationships with partners including Winona Ryder and Kate Moss. He is currently embroiled in a defamation lawsuit with his ex-wife Amber Heard.
