Karl Kani launched the idiosyncratic brand in 1989 to marry his passions for hip-hop culture and fashion. Although Williams initially had no fashion design background, he gained knowledge as an apprentice for his father’s business. While there, he bought raw fabrics and created unique sets he had never seen before.
Eventually, Williams moved to Los Angeles to take her fashion career to the next level. Playfully, the brand’s name originated when Williams swapped the first letter of his first name with a “K”. He then derived the word Kani from the self-doubt he felt when it came to taking risks. He wondered, “Can I? Thus, Karl Kani was born.
