A new Bottega Veneta bag is set to dethrone the Pouch, the soft clutch that helped former creative director Daniel Lee propel the Italian brand into renewed relevance heading into 2020.

Check out the Kalimero, a shoulder bag meant to break the Pouch’s winning streak.

Unveiled during Bottega’s Fall/Winter 2022 show, the bag is one of Matthieu Blazy’s first accessories for the house, where he transitioned from design director to creative director following Lee’s unexpected departure in November 2021.

Seeded to slash-style heavyweights Chloë Sevigny, Julianne Moore and Dua Lipa, the Kalimero takes us from Lee’s #NewBottega to Blazy’s #NewNewBottega, already a hit judging by the reaction to its FW22 debut.

Establishing Blazy’s vision for the home, the Kalimero is a huge departure from the clutch – with a four-sided structure and a sliding strap, it can be slung over the shoulder like a kind of single-strap backpack or worn as a traditional shoulder bag. The strap can even be unbuckled, turning it into a dangling pouch.

The Kalimero also introduces a new version of Bottega’s famous Intrecciato weaving technique. Instead of being precisely squared and tightly woven, Blazy’s technique uses thicker strands of leather that are braided more loosely.

Another point of differentiation: the price. At $7,500, the bag is significantly more expensive than other popular Bottega silhouettes, such as the Jodie ($3,200) and the Padded Cassette ($3,900). (For reference, the cover sells for around $3,400.)

Buckle up: Blazy’s brave new Bottega has arrived.
