“If Usyk can’t be ready, we’ll offer AJ the fight!”

Tyson Fury open to Anthony Joshua Fight instead of Usyk Uncontested Bout!

As for the heavyweight division, the most significant fight to come is WBA Super, WBO and IBF heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (20-0, 13 KOs) against WBC champion Tyson “The Gypsy King” Fury. (32-0-1, 23 KOs). Massive attention shifted to this potential matchup after Usyk successfully defeated Anthony “AJ” Joshua (24-3, 22 KOs) in their rematch. The only reason Usyk is a unified champion is because he first beat AJ to take his belts in the first place.

Naturally, boxing fans want to see Fury and Usyk trade leather to crown the next undisputed heavyweight champion. Unfortunately, the Ukrainian has already dashed all hopes of the duel which will take place this year. He has publicly stated that his need to rest his body and spend time with his family will force the fight into 2023. This statement was met with the typical Fury antics we’ve grown accustomed to. Still, even if Usyk isn’t available, that doesn’t mean The Gypsy King will sit idle.

CALL ON THE BODYBUILDER!

In a recent Q&A with BT Sport, Fury said he was ready to test his power against Joshua this year.

“I still think even though he’s lost three of his last five fights, I still think people would like to see that fight. So if Usyk can’t be ready and doesn’t want to fight for some reason, you know a middleweight against a giant heavyweight, I can understand why he doesn’t want to. If that fight doesn’t happen, we’ll go offer the fight to AJ.

WHO WILL FIGHT?!

As Fury himself said, there would undoubtedly still be a storyline surrounding The Gypsy King vs. AJ. Clearly, much of the suspense has been sucked away. In fact, the two planned to collide last year. Well, that’s what they wanted to happen, so they started negotiating a fight while completely ignoring the fact that Wilder was trying to force a fight with Fury.

In the end, Wilder forced his rematch with Fury to lose. When AJ didn’t fight Fury, he faced and lost to Usyk. Wilder and Joshua have since been trying to put the pieces back together. If AJ were to take on and topple Fury, he would inject whole new life and respect into his career. It’s still a big “if”! If AJ was brutalized, bloodied and knocked out like Wilder has been in back-to-back showings, it would likely signal the functional end of his career.

It is therefore an offer that the Joshua team will want to think long and hard about! So let’s first see if the offer is even made and then we can find out how much fire remains in AJ’s heart.
