When Miuccia Prada bowed out at the Miu Miu Spring 2023 show earlier this month, fashion lovers got wild for her own outfit: the designer wore a zipped motorcycle jacket, paired with a classic White Tshirt and matching leather skirt. “Let’s talk about how Miuccia and Rick [Owens] had the best adjustments of the season,” wrote a Twitter user, also showing Owens’ oversized bomber jacket. Decidedly roomier and boxier than your standard moto, the fan-favorite jackets from both designers argue for a size or two. And it just so happens that the baggy jacket is a fall trend that’s increasingly being embraced by style stars like Bella Hadid, Rihanna and Hailey Bieber.
The roomy moto jacket started gaining traction on the Fall 2022 trails. Saint Laurentlarge motorcycle jackets had loose shoulders and were worn over long black dresses. Louis Vuitton showed oversized bombers with button down shirts and ties, while miu miu paired them with argyle sweaters and leather miniskirts. For a few seasons now, refined, discreet leather jackets were all the rage, drawing inspiration from the minimalism of the 90s. However, the new generation of bombers are stockier and have bigger shoulders, a reference dating back even further to the 80s.
Once the temperatures dropped this month, it didn’t take long for fashion stars to start experimenting with the looser leather look on the street. Like the models in the Saint Laurent show, Rihanna draped her XXL bomber jacket over a classic black evening dress. Hailey Bieber wore hers with black dress pants and chunky Balenciaga sneakers, while Kylie Jenner even paired her zip motorcycle with a white tank and Skim Panties (supporting the brand of his sister Kim, we see).
The key to a successful spacious bomber? Many stars have offset awkward outerwear with a more form-fitting bottom, whether it’s a tight skirt or tailored pants. My colleague Liana Satenstein adds that it’s also good to look for baggy bombers that have shape. (She recently opted for a vintage style with square shoulders and a cinched waist.) “I really like the idea of this ’80s silhouette with a small cinched waist,” she says. “It makes me feel powerful and feminine at the same time.” It might be officially time to retire your cozy motorbikes, so – go big or go home!
